The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness. —John Muir
Trees know things. They watch our follies, our romances, our wise moments, our creative triumphs and our destructive nature. They bear witness to history. Trees keep secrets. Maybe. Perhaps they tell each other everything. Woods whisper. Doors open. Paths move. This is a place to lose oneself, a place to find oneself. A place of becoming. In The Space Between The Trees, I continue my exploration of the liminal.
There is an energy within the forest (between the trees) unlike anywhere else. I believe this is the nature of being encompassed by a landscape which is alive. Life abounds. Seemingly endless it encloses one within its vast embrace. Often viewed as a metaphor for the subconscious, the woods are a place to conjure what you will and explore it in detail. This series explores such possibilities.
A note on materials:
Many of these images are printed on brushed matte aluminum. This material allows for further play with light as the inks are translucent and the aluminum and all of its metallic qualities resonate through, enhancing their glow. The metallic prints mimic the way light plays in a forest. When there is little light, the images appear dark, detail is lost as contrast lessens. When viewed in bright light the images glow and the light changes as you walk past, in a manner meant to capture the filtered light present within the forest.
