Recently a large group of unruly birds has taken to hanging about my studio insisting that I paint them. With loud incessant squawking, soft gentle song, absurd dances and all sorts of mischief and mayhem, they seem quite intent on their purpose. With such a “kerfluffle of birds” hanging about intent on getting their own way, what could I do but oblige. Especially when they have put on their best finery to pose for me, I really had no choice.
The Kerfluffle paintings began as small oil portraits of my birds based on my daily journal drawings. More ornately finished and fully realized than the sketches I hope they please their subjects at least enough that they’ll let me get something else done once in awhile.
From these paintings I have begun creating large format prints. Mounted on wooden panels, they become the basis for large mixed media works allowing for further exploration and embellishment of their subjects. These pieces not only provide a space to explore the physicality of my media but also provide an interesting study in scale when contrasted with the original paintings
